While it is always our goal at O2 Dental Group to save your natural teeth, there are times when the best course of action is to extract a tooth. This treatment is necessary when a tooth has experienced extensive, irreversible damage, when it is impacted, or in preparation for orthodontics.
Before we remove a tooth, we will take X-rays of the area in order to determine the best method for safely removing the tooth. In order to ensure your extraction is comfortable, we will start by providing local anesthesia. If necessary, other dental sedation options are available. This is a numbing substance that eliminates feeling in the immediate area. The extraction is usually quick, and in most cases, you will only feel pressure during this time.
After the extraction is complete, we will instruct you to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to form a blood clot at the site. It is critical not to disturb this area. Patients should avoid drugs and alcohol, using a straw, or intensive exercise, so the blood clot is not disturbed. Healing will occur over the next few days. For comfort and to reduce swelling, an ice pack is helpful. Once swelling has subsided, a warm compress can be used. We also recommend gently rinsing the mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean.
