Lydia Oyegunwa, DMD
Howdy! My name is Dr. Lydia. Most of my patients know me as the “filling doc,” but there is a lot more to me than that.
I was born in Ghana, located on the western peninsula of Africa. When I was four years old, my family moved to Fort Worth, Texas (now you get where my "howdy" greeting came from).
Growing up in Texas, my sisters and I developed a real love for sports, participating in volleyball, track and softball. Football is kind of a big deal in Texas, and I’m all for it.
During college, I spent some time in Seminole, Oklahoma playing volleyball for the Seminole State Trojans. Now, if you know where the small town of Seminole is, you deserve a high five. There, I started developing a love for the sciences, particularly the health sciences.
In 2008, my family decided to relocate to the Bull City, and I decided to follow. I transferred to The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (Go Heels!) where I met the love of my life, Olu. My husband is a tried-and-true Wolfpacker, so he won’t admit that our love started on Franklin Street. We’ll forgive him for that.
At Carolina, I completed my B.A in Biology as well as a B.S in Dental Hygiene. My dental hygiene training taught me a lot about the importance of patient care with an emphasis on prevention and patient education. With this, I developed a real passion for all aspects of dentistry.
So, I decided to continue my education at the ECU School of Dental Medicine. Yes, this meant more school. At ECU, I developed a deeper understanding of dentistry and its role in the community. This training molded me into the type of practitioner I am today.
Currently, I am excited about becoming an active member of the Wilmington, NC community and providing advanced dental care with an emphasis on convenient, affordable dentistry. I can’t wait to see you smile!
